Since we cannot ask babies what they know or what they think about something, some effective research methods have been developed to test their knowledge. There are behavioral methods and neuro-physiological methods. Parents can always indicate whether they want to participate in a particular test or not. In most of the behavioral methods the looking behavior of babies plays an important role. The tests usually take 5 minutes and are designed to interest the baby. For neuro-physiological research more time is reserved, about an hour. In all cases the baby is on the caregiver’s lap, or right next to him/her. The lab visit is usually experienced as rather pleasant!
