For babies, everything is new. In order to be able to deal with so much new information, there must be a system in place to make sense of it all. This system is made up of the ability to recognize patterns and the ability to form rules and generalizations. This system is in place for shapes, colors, faces, sounds and particularly for language. My research is about how infants are able to learn (grammatical, prosodic, phonologic) rules from fluent speech in their environment. I study how infants learn the patterns that make up language, how they form rules from these patterns, which cognitive factors influence this ability, and how this ability evolved.
